Cyprus Expands Integration with EU’s eIDAS Network for Secure Digital Transactions

National eID System IDMe.cy Achieves High Assurance Status for Cross-Border Access

Cyprus is advancing its full integration with the EU’s eIDAS network, a system that enables secure cross-border digital transactions among European Union member states.

According to the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy, the eIDAS regulation ensures mutual recognition and cross-border use of national electronic identification (eID) schemes for accessing public digital services in other EU countries.

Cyprus has successfully implemented its national eIDAS node, connecting it with 17 EU member states. The integration process with the remaining EU countries that have national eID systems, as well as with the European Commission, is currently underway and is expected to be completed by May 2025.

The goal of this initiative is to ensure seamless access to trusted services and electronic identification across the EU, enhancing security, efficiency, and convenience in digital transactions.

For full interoperability between national eID schemes, each system must be notified to the European Commission and meet a defined Assurance Level.

Cyprus' National Electronic Identity (eID), known as IDMe.cy, has been approved by the European Commission at the highest security level (High Assurance). This approval allows Cypriot citizens with an eID to securely access public digital services in other connected EU member states, while EU citizens can similarly access Cyprus' digital public services.

The eIDAS login option is now available to European citizens through the CY Login system, Cyprus' unified platform for accessing government services.
