EnergyIntel’s Funding and Expansion Goals Highlighted in Meeting with Cyprus’ Chief Scientist
Expansion Strategy Backed by DISRUPT Program Support
The Chief Scientist and Chairman of the Research and Innovation Foundation, Dimitris Skourides, recently met with the leadership team of EnergyIntel, a company funded by the DISRUPT program. According to the Research and Innovation Foundation, Mr. Skourides emphasized the crucial role of collaboration and mutual support in advancing innovation in Cyprus.
This visit followed the recent €1.5 million DISRUPT grant awarded to EnergyIntel, along with an additional €1 million in equity funding. The DISRUPT program, a pioneering initiative for Cyprus, focuses on companies that have surpassed the startup phase. This funding highlights EnergyIntel’s dynamic presence and its groundbreaking contributions to energy technology.
During the meeting, EnergyIntel’s CEO, Eugenia Herodotou, and COO, Marios Alexandrou, described the DISRUPT program as not only a recognition but also a strategic affirmation of their leadership in thermal energy storage technology.
EnergyIntel is one of eight companies funded by DISRUPT and currently employs 50 people. Having exceeded its market capital, it is now transitioning from a successful startup to a scale-up. Supported by DISRUPT and INNOVATE grants, the company has gained EU validation for its TES technology, solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable energy solutions.
Mr. Skourides highlighted the importance of this recognition, which supports strategic efforts to repatriate high-caliber scientific talent. Over the years, EnergyIntel has successfully brought back scientists and engineers from countries like the UK, Denmark, and the Netherlands, addressing Cyprus’ brain drain challenge.
EnergyIntel aspires to become Cyprus' first unicorn in energy technology. Key to this vision is its patented TES E247-V1 system, which stores thermal energy in recyclable, high-efficiency materials and converts it through Stirling engines. This technology demonstrated exceptional performance in the NOOR Energy 1 project in Dubai, achieving 95% operational availability over ten months, as verified by DNV, a leading independent certification body.
The company is part of the Hellenic Impact network and the Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) Council, shaping the future of energy storage technologies. COO Marios Alexandrou noted that EnergyIntel's business model focuses on commercialization rather than just research, aiming to provide solutions to some of the world’s largest clients. CEO Eugenia Herodotou praised the strategic support provided by the DISRUPT program, which drives innovation and growth for pioneering companies.
