Low Share of Electric Cars in Cyprus

Low Share of Electric Cars in Cyprus

Just 0.51% of the Vehicle Fleet Is Electric, While Around 17% of Vehicles Are Commercial.

The European Statistical Office, Eurostat, published data on Thursday on the distribution of vehicles across the European Union at regional level for 2024. According to the data, Cyprus records a share of 0.51% electric passenger cars out of the total number of passenger vehicles. At the same time, Cyprus is among the 15 EU regions with the highest share of commercial vehicles, with approximately 17% of the total vehicle fleet.

According to the agency, the highest shares of electric passenger cars in 2024 were recorded in northern regions of the EU. As in 2023, the Flevoland region in the Netherlands retained the top position with 22.1%, marking an increase of five percentage points compared with the previous year. It is followed by Stockholm in Sweden with 14.4%, the Copenhagen region in Denmark with 13.3%, Vlaams Brabant in Belgium with 12.9%, and Midtjylland in Denmark with 12.6%.

In addition, four more regions exceed the 10% mark: Sjælland with 11.6%, the Southern Denmark region with 11.0%, and Nordjylland with 10.2% in Denmark, as well as Utrecht in the Netherlands with 10.7%.

Eurostat notes that the distribution of electric passenger vehicles shows significant geographic variation, with northern and central regions of the EU recording higher shares and southern regions remaining at lower levels.

Commercial Vehicles

Regarding commercial vehicles, which include trucks, tractors, and special vehicles excluding trailers and semi-trailers, the distribution across the EU is more even.

According to Eurostat, among the 15 regions with the highest share of commercial vehicles in 2024, the Aosta Valley in Italy leads with 22.0%. This position is partly explained by the fact that the region borders Switzerland and France and serves as a key corridor for freight transport in Europe.

It is followed by West Flanders in Belgium with 20.5%, the Northern and Western regions in Ireland, and French Guiana, both with 20.0%.

Among the 15 leading regions are also four regions in Finland, three in Belgium, two in Spain, and one each in Ireland and Cyprus, with Cyprus recording a share of around 17%.

Factors Affecting Distribution

Eurostat notes that the share of commercial vehicles depends on several factors. Regional transport systems and infrastructure play a significant role, including the capacity of highways, rail networks, ports, and airports. Economic characteristics of each region are also important, such as whether industry or services dominate and the region’s position along major European freight transport corridors.
