RIF-JST Meeting Paves the Way for Joint Cyprus-Japan Ventures in AI and Robotics

Cyprus and Japan Forge Path for Future Collaboration in Innovation

The Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) recently met in Nicosia, setting the stage for future joint initiatives, particularly in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, energy, space research, and biotechnology.

According to a press release from RIF, the Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation, and Technology of the Republic of Cyprus, Demetris Skourides, and the Director General of the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation, Theodoros Loukaidis, hosted a delegation from Japan at the Research and Innovation Foundation. The Japanese delegation included Ambassador Yamawaki and Dr. Kazuhito Hashimoto, President of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

During the meeting, the Chief Scientist presented Cyprus's strategic vision and significant advancements in innovation, as demonstrated by their performance on the European Innovation Scoreboard. He attributed this success to strategic policies, robust funding programs from the Research and Innovation Foundation, and supportive government incentives.

These collective efforts have bolstered Cyprus's research infrastructure, leading to a significant increase in innovative activities among small and medium-sized enterprises, he noted.

He also highlighted that Cyprus excels in research publications, particularly those arising from collaborations between public research organizations and the private sector, as well as in fostering partnerships among innovative businesses.

Following this, Mr. Loukaidis presented several of the Innovation and Development programs offered by the Foundation, which promote a thriving research and innovation ecosystem.

Dr. Hashimoto and his team expressed keen interest in Cyprus's efforts, which have attracted attention from Japan, the release mentioned.

The meeting was crucial in identifying specific areas for research and innovation collaboration, the announcement noted.

The recent meeting, it added, underscores the strong commitment of both nations to promoting a cooperative environment in research, innovation, and technology.

It was further noted that the discussions paved the way for future joint initiatives, promising to harness the potential of both Cyprus and Japan, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, energy, space research, and biotechnology.

A potential collaboration between Cyprus and Japan is a critical step in Cyprus's strategic vision to become a hub for research and innovation. This aligns with the country’s efforts to enhance its geostrategic position, digital skills, and energy infrastructure, the release mentioned.

The press release also noted that the successful Cyprus-Japan Business Forum held earlier this year demonstrates the growing economic cooperation and opportunities for a more innovative and sustainable future for both countries.
