Women's Participation in Science Careers in Cyprus Close to EU Average

The Number of Women in This Sector in Cyprus Increased by Approximately 3,500 Compared to 2021

In 2022, the proportion of women among scientists and engineers in Cyprus was at 44% (18,500 women out of 42,200 workers), closely aligning with the EU average of 41% (7.3 million women out of 17.8 million workers), Eurostat reports.

According to the same data, the number of women in this sector in Cyprus increased by approximately 3,500 compared to 2021. Across the EU, there was an increase of about 310,500 individuals.

In the EU in 2022, women working as scientists and engineers were primarily employed in the service sector, accounting for 46% of scientists and engineers in this specific field. In the manufacturing sector, only 22% of those employed as scientists and engineers were women.

Similarly, in Cyprus, women employed as scientists and engineers were also mainly found in the service sector (46% of the total scientists and engineers), while the share of women in the total number of scientists and engineers in manufacturing stood at 43%.

Among the EU member states, the percentage of women scientists and engineers in 2022 ranged from 53% in Denmark, 52% in Lithuania, and 51% in Bulgaria, to 31% in Hungary, 32% in Finland, and 34% in Germany.

Scientists and engineers represent just a subset of workers in the science and technology sector, which includes all professions related to the systematic production, promotion, dissemination, and application of scientific and technological knowledge, regardless of the level of education. The category also includes other professions such as technicians or related professionals.

At the level of EU regions (at the NUTS1 level of statistical analysis), the highest percentages of women employed in science and technology-related sectors in 2022 were recorded in Lithuania (which is a single region at the NUTS1 level) at 64.1%, in the French region of Corsica (63.9%), and in Latvia (62.7%), also a single region at NUTS1.

Regions with the lowest percentages were noted in Northwestern Italy (45.3%), Malta (45.8%), and Southern Italy (46.1%).

In Cyprus, which is also a single region at this level of analysis, the percentage of women in professions related to science and technology was 51.4%, slightly below the EU average of 52.2%.
