Aaron Sorkin Returns to Facebook: A New Film on Zuckerberg in the Post-Capitol Riot Era
15 years after The Social Network, Sorkin plans a second, politically charged project based on the Facebook Files.
Fifteen years after the release of The Social Network by David Fincher—and in a radically different political climate—screenwriter-director Aaron Sorkin is preparing to revisit the story of the man who created Facebook.
According to a Deadline report, Sorkin—the screenwriter of the 2010 film—is working on a new project about Mark Zuckerberg for Sony Pictures. However, the report clarifies that this is not a direct sequel to Fincher’s original film.
Rumors suggest that Sorkin, known for directing The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Being the Ricardos, and for writing Moneyball, A Few Good Men, and The American President, may also take on directing duties for this new endeavor.
In a 2024 interview, Sorkin had directly criticized Facebook for its alleged role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. When asked to elaborate, he cryptically responded: "You'll have to buy a movie ticket to find out."
The 2010 film was based on The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich. This new project will instead draw from the so-called “Facebook Files” published by The Wall Street Journal. These documents exposed how the platform impacted young users' mental health and how it influenced events surrounding the January 6 insurrection.
As for the lead role, Jesse Eisenberg—who portrayed Zuckerberg in Fincher’s film—has not yet been officially linked to the new project.
