ChatGPT Agent Can Now Create PowerPoint Presentations

OpenAI’s new ChatGPT Agent blends browsing, automation, and native PowerPoint and spreadsheet creation.

OpenAI has introduced a powerful new AI assistant named ChatGPT Agent, marking a significant step toward turning artificial intelligence into an autonomous tool for managing everyday digital tasks. The agent is capable of performing activities that go far beyond traditional chatbot interactions, offering users the ability to automate complex processes such as online shopping, data analysis, scheduling, and document creation—all within a virtual environment that mimics real-world computer usage.

The ChatGPT Agent can browse the internet, click, scroll, and type like a human user, allowing it to carry out tasks such as making restaurant reservations, planning travel, or conducting in-depth research reports. It can even generate editable PowerPoint presentations and spreadsheets compatible with Microsoft Office and other similar software.

Currently, the tool is available to users of OpenAI’s Pro, Plus, and Team plans, with broader availability for enterprise and educational customers expected later this summer.

According to OpenAI, the new assistant combines the strengths of its earlier Operator and Deep Research tools and is designed for use cases such as financial analysis, competitive benchmarking, and workflow automation. Users can prompt the AI with complex requests like: “Analyze the key features of three competitors and create a presentation,” or “Review my calendar and prepare a summary of upcoming meetings based on current news.”

Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, described the release as a "major step" toward making ChatGPT not just a conversational agent, but an executive tool capable of taking action in the real world. OpenAI President Sam Altman echoed this sentiment, stating that the agent represents a move toward General Artificial Intelligence, capable of operating independently in a dynamic computing environment.

In one demonstration, ChatGPT Agent was tasked with planning a friend’s wedding—booking flights, buying clothing, and choosing a gift—offering a glimpse into the potential of future AI-assisted life management.

Productivity Suite Integration and Implications

Parallel to the agent’s launch, OpenAI is reportedly working on allowing users to create, edit, and open spreadsheet and presentation files directly inside ChatGPT without relying on external software like Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint. New interface buttons now guide users to start such files directly in the chat, and outputs can still be exported to standard formats that work across platforms, thanks to Microsoft's open-source licensing of these file types.

These upgrades significantly reduce reliance on traditional productivity software, potentially positioning ChatGPT as a formidable alternative to legacy tools offered by Microsoft and Google. Given that ChatGPT already runs on Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure—due to their multibillion-dollar partnership—the move adds a layer of competitive tension within the ecosystem.

Safety and Limitations

Despite its impressive capabilities, OpenAI has warned users not to rely on the agent for critical tasks involving sensitive data. Altman emphasized that the technology remains experimental and vulnerable to risks such as phishing attempts or being tricked by malicious content. He urged users to apply strict permissions: for instance, allowing calendar access for scheduling, but avoiding broader email access.

“We are entering a phase of learning from real-world use,” Altman said, calling for a gradual and responsible rollout. “Watching the ChatGPT Agent use a computer to complete multi-step tasks felt like witnessing the dawn of a new AI paradigm.”
