Elon Musk’s xAI Raises $6 Billion, Plans AI Supercomputer
New 'Giga-Factory' to Support Grok AI, Rivaling ChatGPT
Elon Musk's xAI has raised $6 billion in a Series B funding round supported by venture capital firms Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital.
The funding, announced in a blog post on May 26, comes less than a year after the debut of xAI and marks one of the largest investments in emerging AI tools. Musk's AI development venture is closely linked to X.com, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, where xAI debuted its Grok AI service. Musk has been an early advocate of artificial intelligence, initially supporting OpenAI before it launched ChatGPT in late 2022.
He later exited the venture and advocated for the cautious development of related technology due to its potential risks.
Meanwhile, according to reports from American technology media, Elon Musk gave a presentation to investors last Saturday, announcing that his recently founded AI development company, xAI, will build a supercomputer to support the development of its generative intelligence programs, such as Grok, which aims to compete with ChatGPT.
The American magnate told investors that the goal is for this supercomputer, dubbed the "Giga-Factory of Computation," to begin operation within the next 18 months. He also mentioned that xAI will collaborate with Oracle to construct the supercomputer, which is expected to utilize tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of AI processors. This field is currently dominated by Nvidia, whose stock price has soared recently due to this dominance.
Earlier this year, Musk revealed that training the Grok 2 model required about 20,000 Nvidia H100 processors, adding that at least 100,000 Nvidia H100 processors will be needed for the next model.
