Talent Shortage Pushes Employers to Rethink Workforce Mobility

Talent Shortage Pushes Employers to Rethink Workforce Mobility

Global businesses face major hiring challenges.

Finding skilled candidates remains a pressing issue. According to the EY 2025 Mobility Reimagined Survey, 48% of employers report difficulty sourcing the talent they need, while nearly three in four (74%) say filling senior roles can take over a year.

In this context, employee mobility is becoming increasingly valuable—not only as a growth driver for organizations but also as a powerful tool for talent attraction and retention.

The survey, which gathered insights from 1,074 mobility professionals across 22 countries, highlights the divide between organizations that leverage mobility strategically—for talent management or integration of new technologies like GenAI—and those still struggling to adapt.

The survey shows that 85% of respondents believe internal mobility has a positive transformational impact, while nearly half (48%) say such experiences increase their intention to stay with their employer.

Companies that integrate mobility into their organizational and talent strategies are more than twice as likely to achieve annual revenue growth above 10%. This positions mobility not only as a cultural benefit but also as a tangible business driver.

Cost Pressure and Efficiency Challenges

For 96% of mobility professionals, cost reduction is a top priority.

Advanced mobility functions outperform others in tracking performance metrics, such as:

  • impact of mobility on revenue (63%),

  • promotion rates after assignments (59%),

  • speed of filling positions (53%).

Under cost-cutting pressures, these teams adopt nearly twice as many automation and outsourcing solutions compared to less developed departments. Their approach reflects a mature stance on efficiency, resource management, and flexibility—especially in an environment of mounting economic pressure.

Leveraging AI in Workforce Mobility

The adoption of Generative AI (GenAI) tools among mobility professionals is accelerating. Usage has risen from 22% last year to 35% today.

This is more than a passing trend: 70% of respondents expect GenAI to positively reshape the sector, improving productivity, supporting flexible work, and enhancing risk management. By automating repetitive tasks such as drafting documents and aggregating data, AI frees mobility professionals to focus on strategic HR and leadership support.
