What Changes Are Coming to Air Travel Starting September 1

New EU Regulations on Hand Luggage Size, Weight, and Liquid Restrictions Aim to Simplify Air Travel for All Passengers

Travelers should prepare for changes starting September 1 as new rules affecting air travel are introduced. Specifically, the current freedom for airlines to set their own hand luggage regulations will be replaced by standardized rules across Europe.

The European Union is implementing a new set of regulations to simplify and make flights more predictable for passengers. These changes, which take effect on September 1, will standardize the dimensions of hand luggage, while rules for carrying liquids on planes will revert to a universal standard.

Until now, airlines have been free to set their own requirements for hand luggage dimensions, leading to a confusing array of rules regarding permissible weight and size, often frustrating even the most seasoned travelers.

The new EU regulations will enforce uniformity across all European airlines, meaning passengers can expect standardized baggage sizes and weights.

New EU Rules Effective from September 1
  • Maximum Weight: Must not exceed 10 kg.

  • Allowed Hand Luggage: One carry-on bag and one small personal item, such as a purse, backpack, or laptop bag, which must fit under the seat in front of you.

  • Maximum Dimensions: The maximum dimensions (including handles and wheels) are 55 x 40 x 20 cm for the carry-on, while the personal item must be 40 x 30 x 15 cm.

The EU has also decided to reinstate previous regulations regarding the quantity of liquids passengers can carry on flights.

Currently, travelers passing through terminals equipped with Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB) could carry liquids in quantities greater than 100 ml. However, this exception will be phased out until all airports in Europe have the same screening devices in place.
