BlueMed Submarine Cable Lands in Cyprus, Strengthening the Island’s Digital Hub Role

Sparkle and Cyta complete the Yeroskipos landing, expanding high-speed connectivity across the Mediterranean.

Sparkle, Italy’s leading international service provider, and Cyta, Cyprus’s main telecommunications operator, have announced the successful landing of the BlueMed submarine cable at Cyta’s Yeroskipos landing station in Paphos.

The new cable system, part of the broader Blue & Raman Submarine Cable Systems developed by Sparkle in partnership with Google and other operators, connects Italy with several Mediterranean countries and extends as far as Jordan, with further links reaching Mumbai, India.

BlueMed features four fibre pairs and an initial design capacity exceeding 25 Terabits per second (Tbps) per pair, offering ultra-fast, low-latency and scalable data transmission across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

By linking directly to Cyprus, the project strengthens the island’s position as a strategic digital gateway for the region. Through the Yeroskipos station, Cyta now enjoys direct connectivity to Greece, Western and Central Europe via Genoa and Marseille, and to the Levant and other Eastern Mediterranean countries.

“This is a new important stage for BlueMed, a project that embodies our commitment to innovation and collaboration, linking Europe with Africa and the Middle East through state-of-the-art infrastructure,” said Enrico Bagnasco, CEO of Sparkle. “We are particularly glad to celebrate this milestone with our long-standing partner Cyta, confirming our shared vision for strengthening Mediterranean connectivity.”

Cyprus as a Key Digital Gateway in the Eastern Mediterranean

For Cyta, the connection marks a strategic leap forward in the nation’s digital transformation agenda.

“The connection of Cyta to BlueMed will further enhance the Cyprus digital ecosystem and reinforce the island’s position as a key digital hub in the Eastern Mediterranean,” said George Malikides, Cyta’s Chief Technology Officer. His colleague, George Metzakis, Chief Commercial Officer, added: “The arrival of BlueMed in Cyprus marks a pivotal step forward in our ongoing mission to strengthen the island’s international connectivity.”

The BlueMed project has also received funding from the European Commission under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), reflecting the EU’s broader goal of improving cross-border digital infrastructure.
