Cyprus’s car market regained momentum in September 2025 after a sluggish August, with new data from the Statistical Service showing a sharp rise in vehicle registrations and a broader shift toward eco-friendly and used models.

According to the latest report on Motor Vehicle Registrations, total registrations reached 5,544 in September, marking a strong 25.2% increase compared to 4,428 a year earlier — the largest monthly jump since April 2024. Passenger saloon cars led the surge, up 26.8% to 4,364 from 3,442 in September 2024.

Over the first nine months of 2025, total vehicle registrations rose by 3.6% year-on-year to 40,212, compared to 38,819 in the same period last year. Passenger cars increased by 3.2%, reaching 31,325, with 37.7% being new and 62.3% used. Rental vehicles also recorded a notable 32.6% rise, reaching 4,559 units.

The data highlights a continuing transition toward greener mobility. The share of petrol-powered cars dropped to 42.8% from 49.7% in 2024, while diesel models declined to 8.5% from 9.9%. Meanwhile, hybrid vehicles climbed to 44% (up from 36.7%) and electric cars to 4.7% (from 3.6%).

Commercial vehicle registrations also strengthened, rising 6% to 4,569 from 4,311 a year ago. Light trucks increased by 5.7%, heavy trucks by 6%, and rental commercial vehicles by 17.5%. Bus registrations saw an 11% rise to 132, while road tractors (trailers) remained steady at 170.

In the two-wheel segment, mopeds under 50cc fell sharply by 71.8% to 170, while motorcycles over 50cc rose 20.1% to 3,522, indicating diverging trends in consumer preferences.
