Concern Grows Over Cyprus’s Continuous Trade Deficit Increase
Annual Trade Deficit Grows by 8%, Driven by 24.7% Increase in Imports and 58.3% Boost in Exports in Q1 2025
Cyprus recorded an annual increase in its trade deficit for the period of January–March 2025, according to the latest data from the Statistical Service. The trade deficit reached €1.846 billion, compared to €1.709 billion for the same period in 2024.
In March 2025, total imports of goods amounted to €1.021 billion, up by 23.3% compared to €828.1 million in March 2024. Imports from EU member states were €586.0 million, while imports from third countries stood at €435.2 million, compared to €567.0 million and €261.1 million, respectively, in March 2024. The March 2025 imports also included the transfer of economic ownership of ships, totaling €53.7 million, compared to €9.5 million in March 2024.
Total exports of goods in March 2025 were €409.0 million, a significant increase of 55.5% from €263.1 million in March 2024. Exports to other EU member states amounted to €102.8 million, while exports to third countries totaled €306.2 million, compared to €115.5 million and €147.6 million, respectively, in March 2024. March 2025 exports included the transfer of economic ownership of ships, totaling €35.8 million, compared to €36.6 million in March 2024.

Total imports of goods for the January–March 2025 period reached €3.190 billion, up by 24.7% from €2.558 billion during the same period in 2024.
Total exports for January–March 2025 amounted to €1.344 billion, reflecting a significant increase of 58.3% compared to €849.1 million in the first quarter of 2024.
The trade deficit for the January–March 2025 period was €1.846 billion, compared to €1.709 billion in the same period of 2024.
Total imports of goods in February 2025 were €1.035 billion, an increase of 19.9% from €863.7 million in February 2024.
Exports of domestically produced goods, including ship and aircraft supplies, reached €321.6 million in February 2025, compared to €120.5 million in February 2024, marking a substantial 166.9% increase.
The value of exports of domestic industrial products, excluding ship and aircraft supplies, amounted to €311.1 million in February 2025, compared to €111.5 million in February 2024. The value of domestic agricultural product exports, excluding ship and aircraft supplies, reached €9.5 million, compared to €7.9 million in February 2024.
Exports of foreign goods, including ship and aircraft supplies, totaled €173.0 million in February 2025, compared to €153.6 million in February 2024, showing a 12.6% increase.
