Cypriot Defense Industry: Current Landscape, Funding, and Future Goals
The Island Seeks to Bridge the Gap Between Europe and the Middle East in Defense Technology
Cyprus is working to establish itself as a center for defense research, innovation, and industrial production, serving as a bridge between Europe and the Middle East. Currently, 45 Cypriot companies are engaged in scientific research and development within the defense sector, employing more than 500 specialized researchers and engineers.
As Brief reports, these companies have invested €30 million in research infrastructure and have registered 80 international patents. According to the Cyprus Association of Research and Innovation Enterprises, over €500 million in financial grants have been secured since 2010 to support these initiatives.

Members of the association have also established the Cyprus Defense Industry Cluster, which comprises 30 technology companies. These firms have secured contracts in more than 35 European Union defense research and development programs, with a total funding of approximately €450 million.

The government has announced several measures to strengthen the Cypriot defense industry, including:
-
Legislation for High-Tech Defense Industry Regulation – Aiming to enhance national security and economic development.
-
Industrial Cooperation Programs – Encouraging local companies to participate in defense procurement contracts.
-
Establishment of the Defense Research, Technology, and Industry Advisory Council – To promote innovation and industrial collaboration in the sector.
-
Creation of the National Register of Defense Industry Manufacturers – To certify authorized Cypriot defense system manufacturers.
-
Increased State Funding for R&D in Defense Technologies – Enhancing participation in European defense initiatives.
-
Government Support for Cyprus’s Presence at International Defense Exhibitions – Boosting the visibility of Cypriot defense companies globally.
Cypriot companies are already making significant advancements in defense technology. SignalGeneriX has developed the RF Hunter and Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS), while other firms are working on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including micro and mini drones, autonomous maritime and underwater vehicles, loitering munitions, and various other defense systems.
A particularly noteworthy development is the design and production of micro and mini drones using 3D printing technology. These drones, often referred to as "killer drones," can be manufactured in large quantities at minimal cost, revolutionizing modern warfare.
