Cyprus Focuses on Brain Gain and Attracting Quality Investments

Presidential Meetings Highlight Plans to Strengthen Economy and Address Brain Drain

Nikos Christodoulides held meetings on Thursday at the Presidential Palace, focusing on attracting quality investments and encouraging the return of Cypriots excelling abroad in scientific and professional fields. Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis provided details during a press briefing.

The first meeting included the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance, Interior, Energy, Commerce and Industry, the Deputy Ministers for Research and Digital Policy, and representatives from CIPA and other stakeholders.

Letymbiotis emphasized the stable growth trajectory of Cyprus's economy, as evidenced by repeated credit rating upgrades, reduced unemployment, and public debt. He noted that these achievements, combined with Cyprus's EU and Eurozone membership, create a secure and reliable investment environment.

He highlighted that the government’s ongoing efforts, including advancements in tourism, financial services, and innovative technology, offer opportunities for high-value investments. The focus on digital transformation, infrastructure development, and research further positions Cyprus as an innovation hub in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The energy strategy, he added, has the potential to fuel strategic partnerships and diversify the local economy.

Encouraging the Return of Talented Cypriots

In a subsequent meeting, President Christodoulides discussed initiatives to attract Cypriots working abroad back to Cyprus. Participants included the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, the Deputy Minister to the President, the President of the Chamber of Commerce (CCCI), CIPA representatives, and other officials.

Letymbiotis outlined plans to create a supportive environment for professionals, focusing on technology, innovation, and research. He revealed that the government is formulating a targeted plan in collaboration with major businesses operating in Cyprus to recruit specialized scientific personnel.

“The goal is to enhance our workforce with skilled professionals who will drive sustainable development and contribute significantly to the productive process,” Letymbiotis said.

Tackling Brain Drain and Strengthening the Economy

The initiative also aims to counter brain drain by offering incentives for repatriation, creating new job opportunities, and promoting competitive salaries and dignified working conditions. Sectors such as shipping, tourism, energy, and financial services are identified as strategic areas for growth.

Letymbiotis stressed that collaboration between the government and social partners is crucial to achieving tangible results. He also highlighted the potential of leveraging international partnerships and the diaspora network, particularly in the United States, to open new economic opportunities for Cyprus.

“This effort sends a strong message of the state’s intentions: we aim not only to support those who wish to return but also to create the conditions for a sustainable, competitive, and innovative labor environment,” Letymbiotis concluded.
