Cyprus Cabinet Approves ILO Convention on Eliminating Workplace Violence
New Legislation Strengthens Protections Against Violence and Harassment in the Workplace
The Council of Ministers has decided to ratify and implement the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention on the Elimination of Violence and Harassment in the Workplace by approving three related bills.
Following the Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace, Labor Minister Giannis Panayiotou stated, "Today's decision reflects the government's political will to enhance working conditions and improve the quality of life for citizens."
He added that the constructive participation of social partners in the recent social dialogue highlights the shared commitment of the state and society to protect equality and eliminate discrimination, ensuring a modern work environment free from violence and harassment.
The new regulatory framework, he explained, sets out specific responsibilities and procedures for both the state and employers, including penalties for violators. Particular emphasis, he noted, is placed on the responsibility of organizations and businesses to prevent harassing behaviors in the workplace. He added that through the cooperation of all parties, the desired outcomes are expected to be achieved.
The Minister also expressed optimism that the discussion in the House of Representatives would be equally constructive, leading to the ratification of the Convention and the implementation of new laws to protect workers.
