Cyprus Company Receives A €17,000 Fine After The Fatal Injury Of Its Employee

Failure To Take Necessary Safety Measures

A fine of €17,000 was imposed by the Larnaca District Court on a customs, storage, and delivery company, following a criminal prosecution initiated by the Labour Inspection Department of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, due to violations of occupational safety and health legislation.

According to a statement from the Labour Inspection Department, the fine was imposed on the company "Eurofreight Logistics LTD" for a series of violations which, according to the statement, caused the fatal injury of one of its employees and endangered other employees.

Among these violations, it is mentioned, was the failure to perform a lift of an employee under the supervision of a competent person. At the same time, it was found that the company failed to provide its employees with the appropriately designed work equipment required for lifting employees.

Due to these violations, the Labour Inspection Department notes, during the lifting of the cage in which the employee was situated, and which was lifted using a forklift, the cage door opened, and the employee fell from the cage onto a concrete warehouse floor from a height of 3.2 meters, resulting in his fatal injury.

Furthermore, the Labour Inspection Department highlights the company's failure to take the necessary measures to ensure that the lifting of its employees was only permitted with work equipment designed for that purpose.
