Cyprus Residents' Travel Expenditure Surges to €1.39 Billion
Post-pandemic Recovery Marks a Significant Increase in International Travel Costs for Cypriots Compared to 2021
In 2022, Cypriots spent €1.39 billion on international travel, a year marked by recovery compared to 2021 when pandemic restrictions were still in effect.
The Statistical Service released data today indicating that the number of residents traveling abroad for personal reasons reached 158,294 in 2022, showing an increase of 110.5% compared to the 75,204 residents who traveled in 2021.
The total number of trips made abroad in 2022 was 1,234,615, compared to 471,119 in 2021, reflecting an increase of 162.1%.
Travel for personal reasons, such as rest and recreation, visiting friends or relatives, health reasons, or pilgrimage, accounted for 86.4% of these trips, while 13.6% were for professional reasons.
Conversely, domestic travel within Cyprus decreased by 9.7%, from 1,870,923 trips recorded in 2021 to 1,689,154 in 2022.
Personal reasons constituted 98.5% of domestic trips, while business reasons accounted for 1.5%.
According to the Statistical Service, expenditures for trips abroad totaled €1,394.5 million, an increase of 185.2% compared to 2021. Transportation costs made up the largest portion of these expenses at 34.3%, followed by accommodation expenses at 24.3%, expenses for food and beverages at restaurants and cafes at 22.2%, and other expenses at 19.2%.
Domestic travel expenses in Cyprus totaled €266.5 million in 2022, up 2.0% from 2021. The largest share of these expenses was for food and beverages at restaurants and cafes, accounting for 39.1%, followed by accommodation expenses at 32.9%. Transportation expenses represented 11.9% of the total costs, and other expenses made up 16.1%.
