Cyprus Sees 23.8% Rise in Short-Stay Bookings via Online Platforms

Airbnb, Booking, Expedia, and TripAdvisor Lead to Significant Growth in European and Cypriot Tourism

Overnight stays in short-term tourist accommodations in Cyprus increased by 23.8% in the first quarter of 2024 (28.3% in the EU) compared to the same period in 2023, according to monthly data published by Eurostat. These bookings were made through online platforms, specifically Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group, and TripAdvisor.

In the first quarter of this year, overnight stays booked via these online services totaled 123.7 million nights across the EU. Of these, 33.3 million were in January (up 16.7% compared to January 2023), 41.2 million were in February (up 19.0%), and 49.2 million were in March (up 48.0%).

In Cyprus, 760,403 overnight stays were recorded through these four websites in the first quarter of 2024, a 23.8% increase from 612,501 in the first quarter of 2023. Monthly, January saw 200,208 overnight stays (up 20.8% compared to January 2023), February recorded 233,844 stays (up 21.4%), and March had 326,351 stays (up 28.4%).

Spain, Croatia, and France Lead in 2023

The most popular regions for short-term rentals through online platforms in 2023 were Andalusia in Spain (35.6 million overnight stays), Adriatic Croatia (32.6 million), and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in France (24.9 million).

Of the 20 regions (at the NUTS 2 level) with the most overnight stays in 2023, six are in Spain and France, five are in Italy, two are in Portugal, and one is in Croatia.
