Cyprus Sees 73.4% Rise in Hybrid and 97.4% in Electric Vehicle Registrations Compared to Last Year
A Look at the Rapid Growth of Eco-friendly Car Registrations in Cyprus
Hybrid and electric vehicle registrations in Cyprus are advancing rapidly, exhibiting a significant increase over the last few years. In the last five years alone, these registrations have quintupled.
According to data from the Statistical Service, out of the 28,534 private saloon passenger cars registered between January and November 2023, 9,045 were hybrids and 904 were electric, representing 35% of total registrations.
Compared to last year, registrations of hybrid vehicles have increased by 73.4%, and electric vehicles by 97.4%. In the first eleven months of 2022, 5,217 hybrids and 458 electric vehicles were registered.
Comparing this year's data with that from five years ago (January-November 2019), there's a clear surge in hybrid and electric vehicle registrations. Specifically, during the first 11 months of 2019, 1,655 hybrids and 46 electric vehicles were registered (a total of 1,701), compared to this year's 9,045 hybrids and 904 electric vehicles (totaling 9,949), marking an increase of 485%.

Regarding the brands preferred by Cypriots, Toyota leads in hybrid vehicle sales, while MG tops electric vehicle sales. More detailed data for January-November show that Cypriots chose the following brands for hybrid vehicles: Toyota (3,735 sales), Nissan (994 sales), Hyundai (585 sales), Kia (428 sales), and Honda (427 sales).

It's worth noting that, according to the Statistical Service, the total number of vehicles registered increased by 34.6% during January-November 2023, reaching 42,500, compared to 31,584 in the same period of 2022.
Additionally, registrations of saloon passenger cars increased by 37.1%, reaching 34,140, compared to 24,902 in the corresponding period of 2022.
It is also significant that, out of the total saloon passenger cars, 13,894 (40.7%) were new, and 20,246 (59.3%) were used.
