Growing Frustration Among Unions Over Long-standing Issues

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has announced a 24-hour nationwide strike for Thursday, April 23, following a decision by the Trade Unions. During this mobilization, all EAC Offices and Customer Service Centers will remain closed to the public.

Despite the staff's participation in the strike, the operation of critical infrastructure is not expected to experience issues. To ensure the uninterrupted power supply to consumers, security personnel have been exempted from the announced measures.

The Authority urges the public to utilize alternative service methods. Bill payments can be made electronically via the official EAC website, the EAC Mobile App, and banking websites, while payments are also accepted at all post offices. Furthermore, applications for new connections, disconnections, or transfers are processed via email, and the progress of applications for photovoltaic systems and grid connections is available online.

Frustration and Unanswered Demands

The strike at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus emerged from growing frustration among unions over long-standing issues in the energy sector and a perceived lack of action from the government. Tensions escalated after a meeting with Energy Minister Michalis Damianou, where unions expected clear commitments but received no concrete answers. Key concerns include ongoing obstacles limiting the organization’s operations and development, as well as the entry of Cyta into the energy market. Feeling that their concerns are not being treated as a priority and that no meaningful progress is being made, unions concluded that strike action was the only way to apply pressure on the state.
