In 2024, Cyprus maintained a relatively stable weekly working schedule with an average of 38 hours, higher than the EU average of 36 hours. According to data released by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical agency, this figure remained almost unchanged from 38.4 hours in 2023 and 37.8 hours in 2014.
Across the EU, full-time and part-time workers aged 20–64 reported an average of 36 actual weekly working hours in their main job in 2024, down from 37 hours in 2014 and close to 36.1 hours in 2023.
There were significant variations among EU member states. The longest weekly working hours in 2024 were recorded in Greece (39.8 hours), followed by Bulgaria (39.0), Poland (38.9), and Romania (38.8).
Conversely, the Netherlands had the shortest average working week at 32.1 hours, followed by Denmark, Germany, and Austria, each with 33.9 hours.
In terms of economic sectors, the longest working weeks in the EU were observed in agriculture, forestry, and fishing (41.2 hours), followed by mining and quarrying (38.8) and construction (38.7).
The shortest average weeks were recorded in sectors where households are employers (26.7 hours), education (31.9), and arts, entertainment, and recreation (32.9).
In Cyprus, the sectors with the longest working weeks were also agriculture, forestry, and fishing (44.8 hours), household employment activities (43.9), and accommodation and food services (42.6).
The shortest working weeks in Cyprus were reported in education (32.6), activities of international and regional organizations (34.9), and administrative and support services (35.3).
