The project of the Old Municipal Market in Nicosia—restoration and new use—received a major distinction with the award in the Highly Commended category at the SHARE 2024 Architectural Awards of Central and Southeastern Europe.

The award ceremony took place in Athens on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, during the International SHARE Greece 2024 Architecture Forum. The award was accepted by the project’s lead architect from the Nicosia Integrated Development Plan (NIDP) team, of the Nicosia Municipality, George Tsangarides.

The projects were selected by 15 leading industry experts, and the decision to award this project was based on the restoration and new use of the listed building. This is part of the Nicosia Municipality’s strategy to create a Creative Business District, and the project was carried out with a municipal technical team, complemented by external consultants.

The listed building, a characteristic example of Postmodernism in Cyprus, housed the Nicosia Municipal Market from 1965. After its renovation and expansion, it now serves as the permanent headquarters of the CYENS Centre of Excellence.

Countries participating with their projects included Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Poland, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

The project "Entrepreneurship Innovation Center – Creative Business District – Restoration and Expansion of the Old Municipal Market" was implemented under the Cohesion Policy Program "THALIA 2021-2027," co-financed by the EU.
