Cyprus Parliament Adopts International Standards To Combat Workplace Violence
New Legislation Ensures Equality And Protection From Violence And Harassment In The Workplace
With legislation passed by Parliament, international standards for addressing violence and harassment in the workplace are being introduced.
Specifically, the Plenary approved a law ratifying the 2019 International Labour Organization Convention on Violence and Harassment, which had been endorsed by the Council of Ministers the same year.
The bill was submitted alongside other legislative proposals aimed at implementing the convention.
Its goal is to ensure the right to equality and non-discrimination in employment. Essentially, it forms the legal basis for the approval and implementation of two other pending bills currently before the Labor Committee.
During the Committee discussion, it was noted that, according to studies, 12% of workers in the European Union have experienced some form of negative workplace behavior, with bullying primarily affecting women aged 18 to 34. Only 45% of victims report such incidents.
