President Christodoulides Criticizes LNG Terminal Contract with Chinese Consortium

However, the Project Will Be Implemented, Emphasizes the President of the Republic.

The project for the implementation of the liquefied natural gas terminal at Vasilikos should never have been given to this company, the Chinese CPP-METRON Consortium Ltd (CMC), said the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, on Monday, emphasizing that "the project will be implemented."

Arriving at the ceremony for the repatriation of antiquities and ecclesiastical relics, which had been stolen and illegally exported by the antiquities smuggler Aydin Dikmen and were held by the German authorities, at the Cyprus Museum, and asked to comment on the issue of the implementation of the LNG terminal at Vasilikos, the President of the Republic stated, "The first thing I want to mention with absolute certainty is that this project should never have been given to this company." As a result, he continued, it cannot be implemented.

President Christodoulides mentioned that some decisions have already been made, emphasizing that "the project will be implemented."

He added that the implementation of the project is a pillar of the Government's plan to reduce the price of electricity. "Our country is one of the European Union member states with the highest electricity prices. In our plan, which is a holistic approach, there are three specific pillars to achieve this goal, which we promised to the Cypriot people, and in this context, of course, the project will proceed," he noted.

Asked to refer specifically to the floating unit "Prometheus," President Christodoulides stated that "we have already made a specific plan, Plan B, in case these ongoing discussions for this particular source do not yield results."

"Let's wait and see how it develops and accordingly, we will speak more specifically. I repeat, we have the plan if they do not lead to the desired outcome, for the aspect concerning Prometheus," President Christodoulides concluded.
