Significant Increase in International Workforce
It Is Recalled That the Number of Additional Workers Needed in Various Sectors in 2024 Is Expected to Reach Around 12,000
In 2023, Cyprus experienced a significant increase in the number of community and foreign staff, according to the Labor Force Survey presented by the Minister of Labor, Yiannis Panayiotou. Specifically, based on the data, the total number of employed in Cyprus in 2023 reached 463,277, compared to 448,811 in 2022. This marks an increase of 14,466 individuals, representing a 3.2% growth.
Of the total workforce, 352,863 were domestic staff, 52,534 were European citizens, and 57,880 were nationals of third countries. Consequently, European citizens and third-country nationals comprise 23.8% of the workforce in Cyprus, an increase of 9.87% compared to 2022.
In a more detailed analysis, the employment of domestic human resources increased by 1.3% from 2022 to 2023, rising from 348,323 to 352,863 individuals.
Meanwhile, the number of European citizens working in Cyprus shows a rising trend, although this increase is considered limited compared to the more significant growth rate of third-country nationals.
According to the data, the number of European citizens employed in Cyprus increased from 49,840 in 2022 to 52,534 in 2024, a 5.4% rise. In contrast, third-country nationals increased from 50,648 in 2022 to 57,880 in 2023, a 14.3% rise.
It is also worth mentioning that, according to data collected from the relevant state services, third-country nationals working in Cyprus, as managed by the Ministry of Labor and Social Insurance, represent 34.3% of the total. A portion of this total is employed under procedures managed by the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, and Industry for staffing foreign investment companies and by the Ministry of Interior for the employment of domestic workers and individuals with international and subsidiary protection status.
Therefore, third-country nationals working under the Ministry of Labor's procedures consist of 14,424 employees under the Foreign Labor Force Employment Strategy, 7,044 asylum seekers, and 2,716 students who are third-country nationals.
It is recalled that, according to the Ministry of Labor's estimates, the number of additional workers needed in various sectors in Cyprus in 2024 is expected to reach around 12,000.
