In a press release, the CBC said the ECB has shortlisted ten design proposals following an EU-wide competition that attracted more than 1,200 graphic designers. The proposals are based on two themes: “European culture” and “Rivers and birds.”

Survey Process & Timeline

• Public Participation: The online survey is open to citizens across Europe until September 21, 2026.

• Parallel Research: An independent research company will conduct a concurrent survey using a representative sample of euro area residents.

• Final Selection: The ECB’s Governing Council is expected to decide on the final design later this year, combining public feedback, jury assessments, and technical evaluations.

Redesign Features & Transition

• First Major Overhaul: This marks the first complete redesign of euro banknotes since their initial introduction in 2002.

• Key Enhancements: The new banknotes will feature advanced security features, improved accessibility elements, and a reduced environmental footprint.

• Continuity: Existing euro banknotes will retain their legal tender status and continue circulating alongside the new series once introduced.

The Central Bank encouraged citizens to participate in the survey to help shape the future visual identity of Europe's common currency.
