ECB Unveils First Major Banknote Redesign Since 2002
For the first time since 2002, when the euro entered our daily lives, the European Central Bank is moving forward with a complete redesign of its banknotes. The Central Bank of Cyprus is now inviting all citizens to enter the digital ballot box and vote for their favorite proposal.
Two Core Themes: European Culture vs. Rivers & Birds
The ECB presented ten design proposals that reached the final stage through a pan-European competition involving more than 1,200 graphic designers. The proposals are centered around two main themes: "European culture" and "Rivers and birds."
Online Public Consultation Open Until September 21
Citizens from across Europe can view the design concepts and share their opinions via an online survey, which will remain open until September 21, 2026. Concurrently, an independent research firm will conduct a parallel survey among a representative sample of eurozone residents.
Final Decision Expected by Year-End
The ECB Governing Council is expected to select the final design toward the end of the year, taking into account the results of both surveys, the jury panel's evaluation, and technical feasibility assessments.
Existing Banknotes Remain Fully Valid
As for our "old" euros? There is no reason for concern, as they will normally retain their value and continue to circulate side by side with the new series.
