Tractors Head to Presidential Palace as Cyprus Farmers Take to the Streets
Farmers protest EU agricultural policy changes in coordinated nationwide action.
Farmers in Cyprus will mobilise on Thursday from 10:15 a.m., using tractors and other vehicles, heading towards the Presidential Palace in Nicosia to deliver a resolution. The protest will conclude at the House of Europe, where a letter will be submitted to the President of the European Commission and the President of the European Parliament.
In a joint announcement, the agricultural organisations PEK, EKA, Panagrotikos, Nea Agrotiki Kinisi and Euroagrotikos stated that the organised agricultural movement of Cyprus, acting in unity and in response to decisions taken by their European organisations in Brussels—COPA-COGECA (the federation of agricultural organisations and cooperatives of EU Member States)—will participate in the pan-European farmers’ mobilisation on Thursday, 18 December 2025.
They note that the central mobilisation will take place in Brussels, while Member States located further away, such as Cyprus, will organise protests within their own countries.
“The main reason for the protest is the unprecedented pressure on the primary sector, dependence on imports, the decision to change the architecture of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) after 2027 with a reduced budget, bureaucratic procedures, as well as the impacts of the climate crisis, which are leading with mathematical certainty to the dismantling of the farming sector,” they add.
Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Maria Panayiotou said that a priority of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU is the shaping and delivery to European farmers of a strong, fair and effective Common Agricultural Policy, one that responds to their real needs and ensures a substantial reduction in administrative burden.
On the other hand, PEK President Christos Papapetrou said on Wednesday that the agricultural organisations of Cyprus, like their European counterparts, consider the European Commission’s proposals unacceptable, arguing that they dismantle the entire framework on which the Common Agricultural Policy was founded—the EU’s oldest policy.
According to Mr Papapetrou, in Paphos, farmers of the district will gather their tractors at 10:00 a.m. on the Timi road near the airport exit, where they will remain.
The Police announced that, according to the organisers, protesters from all districts will gather at the parking areas of the GSP Stadium and the “JUMBO” store in Nicosia. At around 10:30 a.m., they will proceed towards the Presidential Palace to deliver a resolution and will then move on to the House of Europe, on Lord Byron Street.
