EAC Trade Unions Escalate Measures – Vasilikos, Dhekelia, and Moni Stations to Operate with Security Personnel from July 9

They Denounce a Lack of Strategic Planning and Warn of Repercussions for Consumers and the Economy.

The trade union organizations of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) are proceeding with an escalation of measures, announcing that from Thursday, July 9 at 07:00, shifts at the Vasilikos, Dhekelia, and Moni power generation stations will operate with security personnel, as they made known via a letter to the General Manager of the EAC. Parallel to this, they inform that from the same date, no additions or removals of units from the electricity system will be carried out.

Lack of Progress Triggers Strike Escalation

The trade union organizations, EPOPAI, SIDIKEK-EAC, SEPAIK, and SYVAIK, state that there has been no substantial progress in resolving the problems faced by the EAC and the electrical energy sector, despite the time buffer that was granted following previous work stoppages.

In their letter, they express intense concern regarding the situation in the electricity sector, arguing that it is due to a lack of strategic planning and the inertia of the competent bodies.

Severe Repercussions for Consumers and the Economy

As they state, "the painful situation into which the Electrical Energy sector has devolved, with negative consequences for consumers and the economy of the country, continues with adverse impacts on the operation of the Authority as well."

"The State should be engaging with everything that must be done to secure electricity adequacy, security of supply, support for consumers, real photovoltaics for everyone, and a reduction in cost for the consumer," they note in the letter.

Unions Demand Long-Term Sustainability and Action

"During the previous work stoppages, we conveyed to you the determination of the staff to continue fighting for the protection and safeguarding of our Organization, for the benefit of the Country's Economy and the Consumers," the trade union organizations add.

"Even though we gave a significant credit of time, there was no mobility toward resolving the problems, which we have historically highlighted and which affect the sustainability of our Organization, the cost of electricity, as well as adequacy," they conclude.
