AUB Mediterraneo Launches Smart Robotics Research
New Lab in Paphos to Explore Human-Robot Interaction and AI for Warehouse Automation
The American University of Beirut – Mediterraneo (AUB Mediterraneo), based in Paphos, is advancing a new research initiative in the field of smart robotics with a €100,000 grant from the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) of Cyprus.
According to an official announcement, the funding—awarded under the VISION ERC call—will enable the establishment of a Smart Robotics Laboratory at the university. The lab aims to launch a new research direction in Cyprus focused on robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and human-robot interaction.
The project, titled “Human-Guided Robotic Manipulation via Augmented Reality for Warehouse Automation,” is led by Dr. Raphael Papallas, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at AUB Mediterraneo. As stated in the announcement, the project aims to address labor shortages in warehouse operations through the use of semi-autonomous robots and augmented reality (AR) interfaces.
Dr. Papallas noted that the initiative not only introduces a new research stream in Cyprus but also supports the development of technologies aligned with the European Union’s strategic priorities to tackle global challenges, enhance competitiveness, and strengthen economic resilience.
The project also includes the hiring of a postdoctoral researcher for immediate involvement in the program. Additionally, the RIF funding supports the preparation and submission of a strong new proposal to the ERC Starting Grant—one of Europe’s most prestigious research funding programs.
“We are proud to support innovative research that addresses global challenges and creates new opportunities in Cyprus,” said AUB Mediterraneo Rector, Professor Wassim El Hajj.
The initiative further strengthens AUB Mediterraneo’s role as a regional hub of excellence in education, research, and innovation, the announcement concludes.
