Establishment of a State Film School in Greece

Establishment of a State Film School in Greece

A Major Restart in Audiovisual Education

With funding from the Recovery and Resilience Fund and in collaboration with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece is acquiring, for the first time, a public school dedicated exclusively to film and audiovisual technicians.

A new chapter is opening for Greek cinema and the audiovisual sector, as the studies for the establishment of the State School of Film and Audiovisual Media have been completed. The project was implemented under a programmatic agreement between the Ministry of Culture and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, laying the foundations for a modern public educational institution with a clear professional orientation.

Funding amounting to €327,000 was provided through the Recovery and Resilience Fund and covered the overall design, scientific documentation, and organizational structure of the new School. This marks the first public educational scheme in the country to focus exclusively on the professional training of film and audiovisual production technicians.

The Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, described the completion of the studies as “the first and decisive step” toward establishing the School, stressing that it forms part of the broader strategy to strengthen Greek film and audiovisual creation. As she noted, the aim is to create a high-standard public institution that will offer specialized knowledge and practical experience, enhancing the international competitiveness of Greek production.

Detailed Planning and Modern Infrastructure

The completed studies include:

  • The definition of the School’s mission and organizational structure
  • The formulation of its operational framework
  • The development of detailed curricula in specialized fields
  • The identification of the necessary educational, technical, and building infrastructure
  • The documentation of modern equipment in line with academic and professional standards

The School’s philosophy will be based on linking theory and practice, with the goal of meaningfully preparing students for the labor market.

Fields of Specialization

The State School of Film and Audiovisual Technicians will cover key and critical areas of production, such as:

  • Film production
  • Cinematography
  • Editing
  • Sound recording
  • Post-production
  • Animation

In this way, the initiative seeks to address a longstanding gap in public vocational education in the audiovisual sector, offering comprehensive training in specializations that until now have not been institutionally supported at a national level.

A New Public Ecosystem for Cinema

The establishment of the School is expected to act as a catalyst for the creation of a comprehensive public system of professional education in the audiovisual field. Strengthening human capital, upgrading the quality of Greek productions, and connecting education with the real needs of the industry are central pillars of the initiative.

The Ministry of Culture is now moving forward to the next stages of implementation, utilizing the results of the studies so that the State Film School can soon move from planning to reality, fundamentally reshaping the landscape of film education in Greece.
