NKUA Gains Approval to Launch Operations in Cyprus

Government hails certification of NKUA programs as a new era for higher education and academic internationalization in Cyprus.

The approval of the certification of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) programs for the operation of a branch in Cyprus marks the beginning of a new era for higher education in the country, Government Spokesman Mr. Konstantinos Letymbiotis announced today.

In his statement to the media, Mr. Letymbiotis noted: “For the first time, the path opens for the establishment of university branches in Cyprus. The oldest and largest university in Greece, with a history dating back to 1837, has received operational certification under specific conditions. This development carries institutional, political, and developmental significance, while also underscoring the enduring bonds we share with Greece.”

This will be the first university branch to operate in Cyprus, creating new horizons and reinforcing the government’s strategy for the internationalization of higher education.

The establishment of the NKUA branch—an iconic and prestigious university that has educated thousands of Cypriot students for nearly two centuries—is not only the first step but also a symbolic starting point for a new institutional framework. This framework paves the way for the arrival of more university branches in Cyprus.
