British Government Assists in Developing New Sanctions Enforcement Unit in Cyprus
"United Kingdom and Cyprus Share the Goal of Reducing Putin’s Ability to Fund His Unlawful War in Ukraine"
In a recent address, Leo Docherty, the British Minister for Europe, spoke about the collaboration between the United Kingdom and Cyprus regarding their response to Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, emphasizing the technical cooperation in implementing sanctions.
Responding to a question by Labour MP Afzal Khan, Docherty discussed the Foreign Office's assessment of the "potential complications" for British policies due to "the levels of Russian investments in the economy of the Republic of Cyprus."
The Minister for Europe initially stated that the United Kingdom and Cyprus "share the goal of reducing Putin's ability to fund his unlawful war in Ukraine."
He added that following the Russian invasion in 2022, Cyprus joined the rest of the European Union in adopting an "unprecedented" package of sanctions against Moscow.
Continuing, Docherty mentioned the UK's commitment to working with international partners to ensure the effectiveness of these sanctions and to address their evasion.
"The British government is collaborating with Cypriot authorities to provide technical support in establishing a new sanctions enforcement unit, leveraging international best practices and lessons from the UK's Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation," concluded the UK’s Minister for Europe.
