Christmas Dinner Costs Rise in Cyprus
2024 Survey Highlights Price Increases for Fresh Produce, Meat, and Holiday Essentials
The cost of the traditional Christmas dinner in Cyprus has risen this year, according to a survey conducted by the Cyprus Consumer Association. The survey, which covered various food items, outlined a wide range of prices for a “luxury table,” “economical table,” and a table for lower-income households, with costs ranging from €30 to €300.
The most significant price increases were recorded in tomatoes and cucumbers, with a 131% and 113% rise, respectively, compared to last year. Fresh meats saw an average price increase of around 20%. Conversely, notable price decreases were observed in Merlin oranges and onions, with reductions of 17% and 15%, respectively.
The survey was conducted between December 9 and 17, 2024, and included three rounds of price collection for 35 food and beverage items in Nicosia, Limassol, and Paphos. The same list of items was used in previous years for consistency.
For a “luxury table” consisting of all 35 items, the costs for a family of four were:
-
Nicosia: €212 (€303 for a family of six)
-
Limassol: €198 (€281 for a family of six)
-
Paphos: €215 (€308 for a family of six)
These figures represent an 11.79% increase compared to the 2023 Christmas table.
For an “economical table,” which includes 19 of the 35 items, the costs for a family of four were:
-
Nicosia: €123 (€157 for a family of six)
-
Limassol: €121 (€157 for a family of six)
-
Paphos: €122 (€158 for a family of six)
This reflects a 19.22% increase compared to last year.
For a table designed for lower-income households, consisting of 11 items, the costs for a family of four were:
-
Nicosia: €31 (€44 for a family of six)
-
Limassol: €33 (€48 for a family of six)
-
Paphos: €34 (€51 for a family of six)
This category saw a 14.83% increase compared to 2023.
The Consumer Association noted price fluctuations for certain items during the survey period. However, these changes did not indicate any significant trends warranting further investigation. Many products were offered at promotional prices, most of which remained stable throughout the survey period.
The Association predicts minor changes in vegetable prices leading up to Christmas, though no significant shifts are expected. Slight adjustments may also occur in the prices of fresh meats sold in supermarkets.
