Cyprus Awaits Brussels' Final Verdict on Green Fuel Tax

Government Considers Options on €0.17/Litre Green Tax as It Weighs Impact on Fuel Prices and Compensatory Measures for Citizens

The Cypriot government is awaiting the final decision from Brussels regarding the implementation of a green fuel tax of €0.17 per litre on motor fuels, expected to take effect by 2027, according to Deputy Government Spokesman Yiannis Antoniou.

Depending on the European Commission’s response, the government will decide whether to enforce the tax with the lowest possible rate or to avoid applying it altogether and instead bear the associated financial cost.

Mr. Antoniou clarified that, in any case, the tax will be fiscally neutral, as the government plans to introduce compensatory measures to relieve specific segments of the population likely to be most affected by the increased fuel prices.
