Cyprus Marks 20 Years in EU with Commemorative Coins
Limited-Edition €5 and €2 Coins Now Available.
The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) has announced the issuance of a silver commemorative coin with a nominal value of €5 in proof quality, minted in 2024, in a limited quantity of 2,000 pieces.
According to the CBC, the coin, priced at €52, is issued to mark the 20th anniversary of Cyprus’ accession to the European Union.
As noted, the national side of the coin depicts Cyprus as a force of creation and development within the European environment, symbolized by the EU flag. It also features doves representing peace.
Additionally, the Bank has issued a commemorative coin with a nominal value of €2. This circulation coin, minted in 2024, has been released in a limited quantity of 7,000 pieces, presented in cases. The selling price for this coin is set at €20. The CBC explains:
The national side of the coin portrays Cyprus as a force of creation and development within the European environment, symbolized by the European Commission building in Brussels.
It also features the globe, symbolizing Cyprus’ geopolitical significance and its contribution to peace and prosperity. The building is artistically stylized, emphasizing the strong symbolism of the European Union, the statement adds.
The CBC states that both coins were designed by artist George Stamatopoulos and minted by the Bank of Greece’s Printing Works Department.
Regarding the purchase of coins by professional numismatic dealers and non-profit numismatic organizations, the CBC notes that it will accept applications from November 18, 2024, to November 24, 2024. It adds that it will respond to each application by November 29, 2024, reserving the right to reject any application, either in full or partially, without providing any explanation.
Moreover, the CBC states that sales to the public and coin collectors will begin on November 27, 2024, and, subject to availability, will continue until December 20, 2024.
It adds that sales will be conducted at CBC counters and through its online store, “e-shop,” on a first-come, first-served basis. Each individual may purchase up to two coins per person at the counters and two coins through the “e-shop” for the commemorative coin, and up to five coins per person at the counters and five coins through the “e-shop” for the silver coin.
Furthermore, the CBC notes that after the end of Phase A, and provided coins remain available, Phase B will be activated, during which all restrictions applicable in Phase A will be lifted.
“Therefore, from December 21, 2024, all interested parties may visit/contact the CBC, which will fulfill requests on a first-come, first-served basis,” the announcement concludes.
