Cyprus' Private Debt Reaches 206% of GDP

At the End of the Third Quarter of 2023

Cyprus' private debt (household and non-financial company debt) reached 206% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at the end of the third quarter of 2023, according to the quarterly financial accounts published by the Central Bank of Cyprus.

The Central Bank of Cyprus reports that by the end of September 2023, household assets in financial instruments amounted to 57 billion euros, of which 57% were in cash, deposits, and loans, 2% in bonds, 22% in stocks, and 19% in other financial assets.

Their debt stood at 19.9 billion euros at the end of September 2023, with the relative debt ratio at 68% of GDP, showing a marginal decrease compared to the previous quarter, mainly due to GDP growth.

However, compared to December 2016, the household debt ratio has significantly decreased by 48%.

The corresponding assets of non-financial companies reached 66.5 billion euros, with a distribution of 19% in cash and deposits, 4% in loans, 0.5% in bonds, 46% in stocks, and 31% in other financial assets.

Their debt at the end of September 2023 was 40.2 billion euros, with the debt ratio at 138% of GDP, marking a slight decrease from the previous quarter, primarily due to GDP growth. Compared to December 2016, the debt ratio of non-financial companies has significantly decreased by 73%.

Additionally, the assets of insurance companies in purely financial instruments amounted to 4.8 billion euros, distributed as follows: 8% in cash and deposits, 2% in loans, 28% in bonds, 43% in stocks, and 18% in other financial assets.

Investment organizations have assets in financial instruments totaling 6.0 billion euros, invested as 5% in cash and deposits, 16% in loans and bonds, 76% in stocks, and 3% in other financial assets.

Pension funds' investments in financial instruments amounted to 4.1 billion euros, primarily in cash and deposits at 18%, 15% in loans, 7% in bonds, 50% in stocks, and 10% in other financial assets.
