5 Films that Stood Out this Year

Time to Catch Up During the Festive Period.

With the festive season right around the corner, and the year quickly approaching its final few days, what better way to share your free time with your loved ones than enjoying some of the most gripping films released in 2025?

One Battle After Another

Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest epic has emerged as everyone’s frontrunner for this year’s Academy Awards, thanks to its thrilling script that has kept viewers at the edge of their seats for its entirety. Combined with some incredibly memorable performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, Chase Infiniti, Sean Penn, and the rest of its star-studded cast, as well as the director’s signature cinematography, has resulted in “One Battle After Another” being heralded as one of 2025’s absolute best.

Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man

Benoit Blanc’s latest murder mystery has been successful in revitalizing interest for the franchise, after the somewhat mixed reception “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” previously received. In the third iteration of the classic whodunnit series of films, the script brings a slightly different, more introspective approach to the formula, focusing on personal aspirations, vendettas, and traumas that combine masterfully to produce a memorable two-and-a-half hour thrill ride, accentuated by a standout performance from Josh O’Connor as the troubled Father Jud Duplenticy.

“Wake Up Dead Man” is a perfect option for any kind of holiday movie night!

Bugonia

Yorgos Lanthimos has certainly been keeping busy recently, as he returned with his third film in as many years, with the black comedy “Bugonia.” A remake of the 2003 South Korean film “Save the Green Planet!”, “Bugonia” showcases the timelessness of its message as its core commentary stands true in 2025 as much as it did twenty years ago. Familiar faces in Lanthimos’ filmography, Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons engage in a frantic hostage situation that explodes in all kinds of unexpected directions, making for a film that entertains, moves, and provokes philosophical considerations.

No Other Choice

Park Chan-wook, the director behind contemporary South Korean classics like “Oldboy,” “The Handmaiden,” and “Decision to Leave” took viewers on another journey with his latest movie, “No Other Choice.” A tale of family, bonds, capitalism, actions and consequences, “No Other Choice” is a uniquely creative movie that shares its message through an interesting premise, subtle symbolism, and strong dialogue that moves and inspires.

Sentimental Value

Last but definitely not least, we have “Sentimental Value.” This Norwegian drama by Joachim Trier has been turning heads all year, thanks to its heartfelt, realistic, and moving depiction of a dysfunctional family trying to understand each other, as an absent father struggles to reconnect with his two estranged daughters. The cast gives some absolutely stellar performances that only highlight the script’s brilliance and add an extra element of relatability to its narrative.

Fans of 2020’s “Another Round” will find many things to love in “Sentimental Value.”
