Over 2,500 Cypriots Demand End to Animal Euthanasia in Urgent Plea to President

Activist campaign calls Cyprus’s animal euthanasia practices “immoral and outdated” and urges sweeping reforms in animal welfare laws.

The campaign “Ban Euthanasia of Animals in Cyprus” has sent an official letter to the President of the Republic, denouncing current practices as “not just unacceptable, but immoral, outdated, and reprehensible.” Backed by over 2,500 citizen signatures, the campaign demands immediate and decisive action to protect animal welfare across the country.

In the letter, the campaign outlines several urgent requests, including:

  • The complete abolition of animal euthanasia

  • Stricter legislation against animal abandonment and abuse

  • Mandatory spaying and neutering programs to curb overpopulation

  • Government-supported shelters for stray and rescued animals

  • Strict oversight and regulation of breeders and pet shops

Additionally, the campaign highlights a recent incident involving three dogs, calling it a symptom of “a failed system.” It argues that how society treats its most vulnerable members is a direct reflection of its moral standing.
