Cyprus Launches Free HIV Prevention Service with PrEP Program

In its first phase, PrEP services will be offered free of charge and in complete confidentiality in Nicosia and Larnaca.

The Ministry of Health has announced the launch of a new HIV prevention service, describing it as a “significant step” toward strengthening public health and reducing new diagnoses across the country.

According to the announcement, beginning October 9, 2025, the Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) service will be implemented. This method allows HIV-negative individuals to take specific medication that significantly reduces the risk of infection in case of potential exposure.

PrEP is already being used in many European countries and constitutes a key pillar of the World Health Organization (WHO) and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) strategies. With the introduction of this service, Cyprus fully aligns with international guidelines, strengthening its framework for public and sexual health protection.

In its first phase, PrEP services will be offered free of charge and in complete confidentiality in Nicosia and Larnaca, through afternoon clinics at general hospitals by appointment. Specialized physicians will guide individuals through the process, while additional information and support will be available through the AIDS Solidarity Movement via the “Cyprus PrEP Point.”
