Everything to Expect at the Cyprus International Theatre Festival 2025

World-Renowned Artists and Local Talent Take Center Stage

Following a highly successful debut in 2024 that featured artists such as John Malkovich, Kirill Serebrennikov, and Ivan Vyrypaev, the Cyprus International Theatre Festival (CITF) returns with an exciting program that brings together internationally acclaimed artists while also providing a platform for local creators, strengthening Cyprus’ cultural production.

With a focus on artistic diversity, experimentation, education, and audience expansion, CITF 2025 presents a program filled with performances, workshops, and discussions. The festival aims to highlight the role of arts and culture, fostering communication among Cyprus’ diverse communities while creating a strong nucleus for cultural expression.

This year, special emphasis is placed on family-friendly performances and non-verbal productions, ensuring accessibility for a wider audience.

The festival’s theme, "Fragments of Who We Are," explores human identity and the invisible threads that connect, define, and differentiate us. Each performance and narrative becomes a fragment of the human experience, emphasizing that diversity and unity coexist inseparably. Inspired by the vision of founder Alexander Weinstein, CITF aspires to promote mutual understanding through art, encouraging acceptance and respect.

Internationally Acclaimed Artists on Stage

The festival opens on March 16 with "Io sono un errore" by world-renowned Belgian director Jan Fabre, a leading innovator in contemporary theatre. Through his daring theatrical language and unique directorial approach, Fabre delves into the depths of human existence, marking a spectacular start to the festival.

Next, the Italian dance company No Gravity presents "Commedia Divina," inspired by Dante’s classic poem. This visually stunning performance defies gravity, offering mesmerizing imagery and breathtaking movement.

The renowned Pilobolus Dance Company from the United States follows, presenting a collection of its most celebrated works, specially curated for CITF 2025.

Supporting Cypriot Theatre Productions

A key mission of CITF is to support and promote local talent. This year, the festival showcases two productions by Cypriot creators:

  • À Vendre presents "Voices from Chernobyl", based on the Nobel Prize-winning book by Svetlana Alexievich. Adapted, dramaturgically developed, and directed by acclaimed Cypriot director Maria Kyriakou, the play features a distinguished cast and creative team.

  • For young audiences, CITF introduces "Chroma," a production tailored for children aged 2-6. Created by the award-winning team of Stavros Stavrou (Humart production), Kostas Sylvestros (director), and Theodoros Oikonomou (composer), this performance brings a fresh approach to early childhood theatre.
