Coastal Downgrade: Cyprus Loses 12 Blue Flag Beaches This Year

However, with 64 Beaches and 2 Marinas Recognized, Cyprus Still Maintains Its Global Standing

Cyprus continues to uphold its reputation for pristine coastlines, as the 2025 Blue Flag awards recognize 64 beaches and 2 marinas across the island for their exceptional environmental standards. The island secured the 12th position globally in this year's rankings - a drop from 76 beaches awarded in 2024.

The Blue Flag program, administered by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), is an internationally recognized eco-label awarded to beaches, marinas, and tourism boats that meet stringent criteria in water quality, safety, environmental education, and accessibility. In 2025, a total of 4,302 beaches, 736 marinas, and 158 tourism boats worldwide received the Blue Flag designation.

Cyprus's success is particularly notable given its size, boasting one of the highest densities of Blue Flag beaches per coastline and per capita globally.

On the global stage, Spain leads with a record 749 Blue Flag awards, including 642 beaches, 101 marinas, and 6 eco-friendly tourism boats. Greece follows closely with 657 awards, comprising 623 beaches, 17 marinas, and 17 sustainable tourism boats. Turkey ranks third, maintaining its strong presence in the program with numerous recognized sites.
