Despina Bebedeli Brings 'An Iliad' to Cyprus in a Powerful Theatrical Premiere

The award-winning play by Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare premieres at Satiriko Theater in October — only six performances.

Despina Bebedeli takes on one of the most primal narratives of world literature, embodying the role of the first great creator of European and Western storytelling. Homer, the origin of poetry itself, finds his universal voice this year through the interpretation of one of Cyprus’ most distinguished actresses.

The play An Iliad by American writers Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare, based on Homer’s Iliad in Robert Fagles’ English translation, is a modern and compelling reimagining of the epic. It highlights the timeless and devastating consequences that humanity endures from war and conflict.

This enthralling theatrical experience presents the Poet recounting the eternal tale of war, ambition, arrogance, vanity, and hubris — a story repeated through the ages, crushing human existence. Today’s reality only reaffirms the visionary power of the great rhapsode.

Satiriko Theater presents the Obie Award-winning play An Iliad in Greek translation and direction by Andreas Araouzos, making its Cyprus premiere on October 11, 2025. This unmissable production will run for only six performances.
