World-Renowned Director Declan Donnellan to Lead Masterclass in Platres

“Declan Donnellan – Irish in Origin, English in Education, European in Culture, Universal in Thought – Is One of the Most Original Directors There Are” — Le Figaro

Fresh Target Theatre and Paris Erotokritou are proud to host internationally acclaimed theatre director Declan Donnellan and set designer Nick Ormerod for a masterclass in Platres, focusing on their experiences and reflections on directing and adapting classical theatre within a contemporary context. The masterclass is aimed at emerging directors, set designers, and playwrights. It is part of the "Shakespeare in the Mountain" initiative, which will take place in Platres on 17 & 18 May.

Exceptionally versatile and deeply talented, Declan Donnellan is widely regarded as one of the greatest living directors in world theatre. Since founding the company Cheek by Jowl in 1981 with his partner, designer Nick Ormerod, Donnellan has directed over 40 groundbreaking productions around the world, in English, Russian, and French. The company has gained an international reputation for breathing new life into classical texts through intense, vivid performances that — according to The Guardian — “shine a laser of light on the text to set it ablaze.”

In addition to Shakespeare and other major British playwrights, Donnellan has directed European classics by authors such as Racine, Corneille, Lessing, Ostrovsky, and Lope de Vega. In 1989, he became Associate Director of the Royal National Theatre, and in 2000, he founded a theatre company in Moscow, staging productions of works by Shakespeare, Chekhov, and Pushkin. He has directed at some of Europe’s most prestigious theatres (Piccolo Teatro, Pushkin Theatre, Avignon Festival), as well as at the Bolshoi Ballet. He has been awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement by the Venice Biennale and an Olivier Award for Best Director for As You Like It.

His book, The Actor and the Target, originally published in Russian in 2001, has since been translated into 15 languages, including English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Romanian, and Mandarin. His second book, The Actor and the Space, was recently published.
