Greek Island Voted World's Most Relaxing Destination
Alonnisos is Named the Most Relaxing Holiday Destination in the World for 2026
Alonnisos has been named the top relaxation destination worldwide for 2026, thanks to its serene atmosphere, crystal-clear waters, and unique natural beauty. The island stands out for its calm environment and the opportunity it offers to explore Europe's largest protected marine area.
In an era where most people seek peace and decompression, Alonnisos is an ideal choice for those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of mass tourism. With a laid-back pace of life, an authentic island feel, and pristine beaches, it is considered one of the most unpretentious and authentic Greek islands.
The distinction emerged from a study by Solmar Villas, which evaluated more than 160 travel destinations internationally. Alonnisos stood out due to the absence of large tourist crowds, its impressive natural landscape, its relaxed daily life, and its ideal summer conditions.
As the most secluded island of the Northern Sporades, it offers an experience quite different from more cosmopolitan destinations like Skiathos. Free of overcrowding, cruise ships, and excesses, Alonnisos remains a quiet destination that combines natural beauty and authenticity.
The island features numerous options for nature lovers and activity enthusiasts. The National Marine Park of Alonnisos is an important habitat for the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) and covers a vast marine area of unique biodiversity. At the same time, visitors can take boat excursions to small, uninhabited islands, such as Kyra Panagia, which hosts a historic 12th-century monastery.
Alonnisos is also considered a top destination for diving and snorkeling. In the area of Peristera, Greece's first underwater museum operates, also known as the "Parthenon of Shipwrecks", where divers can admire ancient amphorae in impressively clear waters with excellent visibility.
The island's Old Town (Chora) holds a special charm of its own, built amphitheatrically on a hill with a panoramic view of the Aegean. Cobblestone alleys, traditional houses, and balconies filled with flowers create an authentic setting reminiscent of a postcard.
The island's beaches rank among the most beautiful in the Sporades. Agios Dimitrios impresses with its turquoise waters, Kokkinokastro stands out for its red cliffs and deep blue sea, while Chrysi Milia is an ideal choice for families thanks to its shallow and calm waters.
Furthermore, Alonnisos places a strong emphasis on ecotourism and sustainability. It features dozens of kilometers of marked trails through pine forests and olive groves, and it ranks among the first Greek islands to significantly restrict the use of plastic bags.
The same study indicated that Greece as a whole constitutes a top choice for peaceful and quality holidays in 2026, as most of the ten most popular relaxation destinations are located on Greek islands and regions across the country.
