Hamnet: The Acclaimed Shakespeare-Inspired Film Opens in Cyprus Cinemas

Chloé Zhao adapts Maggie O’Farrell’s award-winning novel for the big screen.

The film will be screening from 22 January at K. Cineplex, Premier Cinemas The Mall of Nicosia, K. Cineplex & Rio Premier Cinemas in Limassol, and K. Cineplex Larnaca.

The poor Latin schoolteacher William Shakespeare and the open-minded Agnes experience a passionate relationship that leads to marriage. They have three children, and as Shakespeare gradually establishes himself on the theatrical scene of distant London, Agnes is left to manage the household on her own.

A tragic event shakes their once-strong bond. However, this shared experience becomes the seed for Hamlet, Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece.

The award-winning novel by Maggie O’Farrell was originally published in 2020 under the title Hamnet & Judith. In 2023, it was adapted for the stage by Lolita Chakrabarti. Although the Northern Irish author has enjoyed a successful literary career since 2001, this marks the first time her work has been adapted for the big screen.

London-based producer Liza Marshall secured the film rights to the book before its release in bookstores. However, the project officially moved forward in 2023, when Chloé Zhao’s involvement was announced.

Beyond the novel itself, the screenplay incorporates elements of the Nine Herbs Charm, a healing spell originating in 10th-century Saxon England, which appears at various points in the film.

Meanwhile, Sam Mendes was initially attached to direct the project, with Tom Holland considered for the role of Shakespeare. Although Mendes later withdrew, he remained on board as a producer.

Focus Features secured distribution rights for the United States, while Universal Pictures took charge of international markets.

Max Richter incorporated one of his earlier musical themes from his 2004 album The Blue Notebooks, specifically On the Nature of Daylight.
