The Nicosia International Festival 2025 and the Organisation for Positive Urbanism (Opu) Present the Bicycle Film Festival
The Event Will Be Held in Nicosia for the First Time on October 19.
The Bicycle Film Festival invites people of all ages to rediscover the bicycle as a powerful symbol of sustainability, health, and freedom. Through a rich and multifaceted program, the festival blends art, storytelling, culture, and wellness, both mental and physical, around a shared passion: the bicycle.
The day kicks off with a family bike ride through the Linear Park to the Nicosia Municipal Theater, starting at 10.30 from OPU House, Agioi Omologites. The first screening kicks off at 11.30 with Program 1 - All Ages, perfect for kids and adults alike, will include animated and live action international short films that celebrate cycling in all its forms.
Beyond the screen, the festival offers outdoor free activities:
-
Nicosia Rollers, the Dutch Embassy, and Alexandros Agrotis (professional road cycling athlete based in Japan) will lead biking and roller-skating sessions for children and adults.
-
Jo’s Funland will guide kids through a creative adventure of nature-inspired crafts.
In the afternoon, a community bike ride welcomes all skill levels and sets the tone for the second half of the day. At 16.30 Program 2 - Cinematic Shorts includes “The Invincible 65,000”, a compelling short film exploring the lives of New York City’s bicycle delivery drivers. Inspired by it, a panel will feature
-
a local delivery driver,
-
a cycling advocate,
-
and an e-bike expert,
all based in Cyprus, sharing insights into the realities of urban cycling.
At 19.00 Program 3 Cycle for Change shorts, which includes a short film documenting Alexandros Agrotis’s 23-hour ride around the island to raise funds for the Cyprus Oncology Department which once treated him, will be followed by a Q&A session with Alexandros and director Nicoleta Assioti.
The day wraps up with music by Cotsios o Pikatillis and craft beers by Humor.
OPU is a non-profit organization based in Nicosia, made up of a collective of young people working to make the city more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly. It focuses on awareness campaigns related to urban space, which include information dissemination, tactical urban design interventions, workshops, and social and cultural events.
The Bicycle Film Festival started in New York and over the last 25 years has travelled to over 100 cities worldwide, including Buenos Aires, Copenhagen, New York City, Paris, Sydney, and Tokyo.
