Protaras: The Heart of Open Water Swimming Beats at Fig Tree Bay
A Unique Competitive Weekend Bringing Together Amateur and Elite Athletes in Cyprus.
On April 18 and 19, 2026, Protaras will become a reference point for open water swimming, hosting a full competitive weekend at the iconic Fig Tree Bay.
In one of Cyprus’ most recognizable natural settings, athletes of all levels, from grassroots swimmers to the European elite, will stand on the same starting line in a high-standard event.
The Protaras Open Water welcomes both competitive and amateur swimmers, offering 5 km races in two age and competition categories:
Junior Men & Women – 5 km
Open Men & Women – 5 km
With professional organization, certified courses, and strict safety measures, the event promises high-level competition in an environment that combines crystal-clear waters, ideal weather conditions, and a stunning coastal backdrop. Fig Tree Bay is not just a popular tourist destination, but a natural open-sea “stadium,” ideal for performance and a premium sporting experience.
During the same weekend, Protaras will host Leg 1 of the European Aquatics Open Water Cup, placing Cyprus on the official European open water swimming calendar.
The competition program includes:
10 km Elite Race featuring top European open water swimmers
Special Olympics Open Water Cup – 800 m, promoting inclusion and participation
Masters – 3 km
The coexistence of different levels of the sport in the same place and time creates a multi-layered sporting event, from rising juniors and masters swimmers to elite athletes competing for points at the European level.
