Smoke in Cabin Forces Flight from Paphos to Divert to Turkey

The pilot made the decision to divert and land in Izmir as a precaution.

An EasyJet flight from Paphos to Bristol was forced to make an emergency landing in Izmir, Turkey, just after midnight on Sunday, following reports of smoke in the cabin.

Flight EZY2902, operated with an Airbus A320, had been airborne for around 1 hour and 20 minutes and was cruising at 36,000 feet when a smoke alert reportedly triggered in the cabin. The pilot made the decision to divert and land in Izmir as a precaution.

“We can confirm that flight EZY2902 from Paphos to Bristol was diverted to Izmir due to a technical issue that caused a smell of smoke in the cabin,” an EasyJet spokesperson told the Cyprus News Agency, adding that the aircraft landed safely.

Emergency services were deployed on the ground as a precaution, but the landing took place without incident. All passengers disembarked normally and were accommodated overnight in hotels, with meals provided.

The passengers later resumed their journey to the UK on a separate flight, EZY9902.

“The safety of our customers and crew is our highest priority,” the spokesperson emphasized. “Our fleet operates in strict compliance with all manufacturer guidelines. We thank our passengers for their understanding and apologize for the inconvenience caused.”
